Biography

Teaching runs in my family. I started in academia over four decades ago - teaching mathematics and quantitative subjects at the university level - and then spent the next decades building software for several of Canada’s “Big Six” and two of the largest U.S. banks. The constant thread: reduce complexity to fundamentals, then rebuild with clear, verifiable steps.

At SoftwarePatternsLexicon.com I document language-aware design idioms and real-world architectures: microservices, streams, enterprise integration patterns, bitemporal data modeling, warehousing, and distributed systems. Guides emphasize intent → structure → consequences, runnable examples, and honest trade-offs.

I founded Tokenizer Inc., which publishes this library and develops the apps available through Mastery Exam Prep. IT Mastery provides separate practice for supported IT and cloud certifications; Finance Prep and PM Mastery serve their respective exam families.

Experience Highlights

  • Decades in banking/fintech: core systems, capital markets, risk, data platforms.
  • Microservices & event-driven systems (Kafka), integration patterns, and API design.
  • Search/relevance & data platforms; contributions to the Apache Solr/Lucene ecosystem.
  • Bitemporal models, warehousing, OLAP/BI, and streaming ETL.
  • Developer experience: testing, observability, performance, and refactoring at scale.

Teaching Philosophy

  • First principles: derive before you memorize.
  • Practice-forward: hands-on examples, edge cases, and practical exercises.
  • Plain language: concise text, diagrams when they help, primary references where relevant.

Editorial Standards

  • Primary sources: language specs, official docs, seminal papers, and production references.
  • Runnable code: minimal, idiomatic examples with tests where relevant.
  • Trade-offs disclosed: when not to use a pattern is stated explicitly.
  • Corrections: email fuad@efendi.ca; include the page URL and a source or reproducible example where available.

Collaborators & Peer Review

The lexicon is free to read. I welcome volunteer reviewers and contributors (language experts, architecture reviewers, test writers).

  • Public attribution only with the contributor's permission.
  • Review scope and arrangements agreed for each contribution.

AI and editorial responsibility

I use AI tools to draft and revise material and to assist review. I direct the guide structure, scope and editorial priorities. That responsibility does not mean I personally wrote every sentence or executed every example.

Review depth varies across this large library. Some guides contain older material, and a recent modification date is not proof that every technical detail has been revalidated. The aim is to improve explanations and examples through focused review and useful reader reports.

See the editorial and corrections policy for the approach and its limits. For a correction, send the page URL and specific issue; a counterexample or authoritative reference helps.

Links to Mastery Exam Prep identify products from my company. They are not independent recommendations or endorsements by a certification body. The technical guides here remain free to read.

Upon giants’ shoulders, I reach for the stars.

Enriched by wisdom freely given to me."
