Wrong boundaries rarely fail as a single dramatic event. More often they create a pattern of daily friction that teams gradually normalize: one more synchronous hop, one more shared table, one more release dependency, one more support escalation because nobody owns the full workflow. By the time the architecture is labeled a problem, those small exceptions have already become the actual system.
This matters because the cost of weak boundaries is not limited to technical elegance. It appears in latency, reliability, team coordination, deployment speed, and incident response. A poor decomposition can make a system worse than the monolith it replaced because it adds network, observability, and consistency cost without earning real autonomy.

One of the fastest visible symptoms of wrong boundaries is chatty interaction. A user request that should involve one or two meaningful collaborations becomes a long chain of small synchronous calls. This hurts the system in several ways:

The issue here is not only speed. It is that the workflow still wants more cohesion than the architecture provides.
Shared database access is another common cost multiplier. Teams often accept it because it seems efficient: one report needs a field, one service wants to avoid building an API, one migration feels easier if two services keep touching the same tables. Over time that convenience turns into change paralysis.

Wrong boundaries also create duplication. If no service cleanly owns the business rule, several services start reimplementing versions of it locally. It is model drift.

Weak boundaries are also social boundaries. If no team owns the full meaning of the service, incidents bounce between squads, review meetings stall, and roadmap changes require constant negotiation. Reliability drops because failure handling crosses unclear ownership lines. Delivery slows because one boundary cannot change without triggering several others.
This is one reason wrong boundaries are so expensive: they create technical and organizational coupling at the same time.
